Experience Summary
The Interpreter Preparation Program at Phoenix College provided me with experience through a variety of simulated trainings, internships, and volunteer opportunities.
Training simulations included VRI and VRS, job interviews, a vocational rehabilitation interview, mental health settings, a parent-teacher conference, nursing interactions, and a dental appointment. This type of hands-on learning offered insight into a variety of common scenarios and cultural differences.
My internship involved interpreting at a Day Program, a high school classroom, and a college classroom. Through continuous exposure in these areas, I have gained experience in educational and social settings with various D/deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals and their communication styles.
My volunteering experiences include a sports-related event, an escape room, 12-step meetings, the Renaissance Festival, and the Arizona Book Festival. These volunteer opportunities provided exposure to a wide range of environments and interpreting situations.
Throughout the program, I practiced ethical decision-making by applying the RID Code of Professional Conduct while also developing strong self-reflection skills.
